"Classic abaya" or "Dubai abaya": on boutique websites as well as on social media, these two terms come up constantly, though it is not always clear what distinguishes them. The real difference does not lie in the city of origin, but in three things: the fabric, the finishes, and the occasion for which you are wearing it. Here is how to recognize them and which one to choose.
1. The classic abaya: everyday elegance
The classic abaya is recognizable by its loose, clean-cut silhouette, sober tones (black, brown, beige, burgundy), and the absence of heavy embellishments. It can be worn from morning until night: for work, running errands, going to the mosque, or visiting family.
- Fabrics: matte and low-maintenance, wrinkle-resistant and easy to wash
- Finishes: discreet, sometimes featuring pockets or a belt
- Strength: it pairs with all your scarves and accessories
Our examples: the Mina Abaya, oversized and ready in seconds; the Safa Abaya, plain black with a neat drape; and the Analya Abaya, with its sharp and timeless cut.
2. The Dubai abaya: the piece for special occasions
The so-called "Dubai abaya" is inspired by designs from the Gulf: fine fabrics, embroidery, beadwork, and rhinestones, wide sleeves, and often a matching hijab or scarf. It is the outfit for weddings, Eid, parties, and ceremonies.
- Fabrics: luminous satin or fluid Medina silk, which highlight the embellishments
- Finishes: handmade embroidery, pearls, sequins, lace
- Strength: a complete and striking outfit, without the need for accessories
Our examples: the Aby Abaya in Medina silk embroidered with pearls and sequins; the Iris Abaya in beaded grey satin; and the Nada Abaya in taupe with rhinestone embroidery, delivered with its matching hijab.
