How to wash and care for your abaya without damaging it

Abaya Amalya rose poudré à dentelle brodée

A well-maintained abaya retains its drape, colors, and embroidery for years. The good news: all it takes are a few simple steps, adapted to the fabric and the ornaments. Here is our method, material by material.

1. Before any washing: three rules

  • Read the label: it always takes precedence over general advice.
  • Turn the abaya inside out and close buttons and snaps: this reduces friction on the embroidery and fabric.
  • Wash dark colors separately for the first few washes, especially black, burgundy, and navy blue.

2. Medina silk: the easiest to care for

This fluid, matte crepe is designed for everyday wear. Use a delicate cycle at 30°C with a mild detergent, then hang to dry: most wrinkles disappear on their own.

3. Satin and embroidered abayas: handle with care

Beads, sequins, rhinestones, and lace are fragile in the washing machine. To keep them intact:

  • Hand wash in cold or lukewarm water, without rubbing the embroidery.
  • Do not wring: gently press the fabric in a towel, then hang to dry.
  • Never iron directly over ornaments: steam to remove wrinkles, or iron inside out with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.

4. Pashmina: treat as delicate wool

Soft and cozy, pashmina dislikes both heat and friction. Hand wash in lukewarm water, without twisting the fabric, then dry flat on a towel to maintain its shape. Between washes, airing it out is often sufficient.

5. Summary

Fabric Washing Drying De-wrinkling
Medina silk Delicate 30°C On a hanger Rarely needed
Satin, embroidered abaya Hand wash, cold water On a hanger, do not wring Steam, never on ornaments
Pashmina Hand wash, lukewarm water Flat Light steam

6. Storing and protecting your abayas

  • Use a wide hanger, never a thin one that creates marks on the shoulders.
  • Keep away from direct light, which fades dark colors.
  • Use a fabric garment bag for ceremony abayas to protect the embroidery.
  • Apply perfume to skin, not fabric: some materials can stain. Our alcohol-free perfumes and musks are gentler on delicate fabrics.
